About this dataset

This list holds research awards made by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). NSF is a principal funder of U.S. basic research, and the outcome of its competitive awards — project title, recipient institution, and amount — is public.

How to read it

  • The award amount usually covers several yearsNSF awards fund a multi-year project period, so the figure shown is normally the estimated total for the whole period rather than an annual budget. Year-by-year funding is tracked separately.
  • Awards go to projects, and to institutionsThe award is made to a proposed project, and the recipient is generally the institution rather than the individual. If the principal investigator moves, the award may be transferred.
  • Scope, not merit, drives the biggest numbersLarge awards tend to fund multi-institution centers or shared infrastructure such as computing and instrumentation, rather than a single lab. Size does not map onto scientific importance.

FAQ

What is the NSF?
The National Science Foundation, a U.S. federal agency. Separate from the NIH, which leads on medical research, it funds competitive basic research across mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, and the social sciences.
Does the whole award go to the research itself?
No. An award covers direct costs plus the institution's indirect costs, so not all of it is spent on the research activity.
