About this dataset
This list holds every device, drug, and food recall reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Almost all U.S. recalls are initiated voluntarily by the company; the FDA classifies them by the health hazard involved and publishes the result. Filter by class and product type.
How to read it
- Class I, II, and III describe the health hazardClass I means there is a reasonable probability that use will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Class II means temporary or medically reversible harm is possible, or serious harm is remote. Class III means use is not likely to cause adverse health consequences — labeling or specification issues, for example.
- A recall is not always about products already in homesThe depth of a recall ranges from pulling stock back at the retail level to asking consumers to return product they already own. Whether a specific item is covered comes down to lot numbers and distribution dates.
- A high recall count is not automatically a quality signalCounts also reflect how broad a company's product line is and how readily it reports. When the same firm appears repeatedly, the useful next step is to look at which product types and which classes.

How serious is a Class I recall?
It is the most serious of the FDA's three classes: there is a reasonable probability that using the product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Stop using the affected lot and follow the contact instructions given.
Does the FDA order recalls?
Most U.S. recalls are initiated voluntarily by the company. The FDA classifies, publicizes, and oversees them, and uses its mandatory recall authority in limited situations, such as when a firm does not act.
How do I check whether my product is affected?
Compare the product name, lot numbers, and distribution dates on the recall's detail page with the labeling on the item you hold. If it is unclear, follow the firm contact or FDA guidance listed there.
